ABSTRACT:

The suite of satellite land surface products from MODIS has been used to evaluate land surface snow-free and snow albedos and their dependence on solar zenith angle from weather and climate models and from other satellite products. Model deficiencies are identified along with possible solutions.

More recently, revisions are proposed to address two important issues (i.e., underestimate of daytime surface skin temperature over arid regions and early snow melt) in the Noah land model as used in the NCEP operational weather forecasting and the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). Our revision on the skin temperature was implemented in the NCEP operational model (GFS) in May 2011, while we are currently testing the impact of our snow revisions on WRF and GFS modeling.
