Abstract. On the eve of starting global climate simulations for the
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report
(AR5), this talk reviews a range of theoretical issues (from radiative forcing to regional climate change) key to interpreting the observed trends and to projecting the future climate change. It also covers recent studies of aerosol long-range transport, aerosol-cloud interactions and aerosol-induced circulation changes coming out of the development of the next-generation GFDL general circulation model to be used for AR5. The wide use of satellite retrievals and in-situ measurements in validating model physical parameterizations and in diagnosing model behaviors is highlighted throughout the talk. |
